Tax Talk - Donations rebate causes tax bill

When you claim a donations rebate and all your income is taxed at source, IRD will issue a Personal Tax Summary (PTS) to trigger the rebate.

Sometimes, particularly if something unusual has happened like a change of jobs, this can lead to a significant tax bill, which would not ordinarily be payable. There's nothing written down that we're aware of, as to what to do in this circumstance. According to an IRD staffer, when the PTS arrives, you ring IRD and tell them to issue the donations refund and suppress the PTS, which you have not asked for.
